This post gets at one of the major themes in The Singular Exploits of Wonder Mom and Party Girl. In the novel, Audrey feels like she has to be all things to everyone — the feeling that Liz Nord describes in her essay below. The problem for Audrey, however, is that it takes her longer to figure out that she can, in fact, say no to people. Instead, to keep pace with all of the demands that the people in her life place upon her, she turns to drug use — which initially works wonders for her. But then… Well, if you haven’t read the book, I don’t want to ruin it for you. Let’s just say that one of the things Audrey has to learn is the value of saying no… in more ways than one.
