“Into the Yoni” by M. Zapatero

A friend of mine and I were talking about Stranger Things — talking in the sense that we were emailing back and forth while I worked on this song and she was recovering from a car accident. I said I was working on this song as a tribute to the kind of music that’s on the Stranger Things soundtrack. At some point, I said that the gateway into the upside-down strikes me as the opposite of a phallic symbol, and she said that the word I was looking for was “yonic.” So that’s where the title comes from. (It’s good to have smart friends.)

Fans of Depeche Mode might notice a familiar phrase that echoes throughout the piece. I didn’t realize how close that phrase sounded to the riff in “I Want You Now” until after I played the recording back.

Also noteworthy is the fact that the lyrics aren’t mine. They’re just vocal samples that came pre-loaded into a program that I use, and I thought they sounded good. One of the things I’m trying to do in this track is to make it sound like the singers are stepping on each other’s lines and interrupting each other. It’s supposed to be kind of funny.

One other thing: I think the screaming synth solo in the middle is pretty cool — slightly reminiscent of the solo in “Daily Nightly” by the Monkees. (And, as I’m sure you’re aware, Monkees is the craziest people!)

Enjoy!
